Subject: The American Glass Guild (AGG) Annual Conference
The American Glass Guild (AGG) is pleased to announce their third annual conference to be held August 1-3, 2008, followed by two days of tours of important stained glass installations in the Philadelphia area. Speakers include Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe,from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, speaking on both Harry Clarke, about whom she wrote a comprehensive biography, and the important glass artist Wilhelmina Geddes. Conservators from the Lincoln Cathedral in England will present the celebrated recent treatment of the Dean's Eye Rose Window. Rowan LeCompte will discuss his significant body of work, created over the past 60 years for a wide array of installations including the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Other national and international stained glass artists, art historians and conservators, such as Susan Greenbaum, Carol Heidschuster, Bob Jaeger, Kathy Jordan, Lance Kasparian, Barbara Krueger, Tom Kupper, Charlie Lawrence, Gene Mallard, Ellen Mandelbaum, Michael Mezalick, Ellen Miret,Nancy Nicholson, Lindsy Parrott, Robert Pinart, E. Scott Taylor, Donald Samick, Judith Hiemer Van Wie,Geoffrey Wallace, David Wilde, and Diane Wright will make presentations. Topics include the design journeys of many modern artists, estimating stained glass projects, lime putty mortars, proper structure and support, Belcher Mosaics and Tiffany Studios, among others. Guggenheim Fellow Judith Schaechter will lead a three-hour pre-conference workshop entitled "Rethinking Stained Glass" the morning of August 1, 2008. Other pre-conference workshops include glass painting, computer design, fabrication and structure by well-known artists and conservators in the field: Debora Coombs, J. Kenneth Leap, Arthur Femenella and Roberto Rosa. For the first time the AGG will have an exhibit of members' work at the conference site. All members are encouraged to participate, but space is limited, so reservations must be made by contacting Exhibit Chair, Barbara Krueger 248-887-1283 bek4450<-a t->aol< . >com by June 15, 2008. Glass panels must be ready for hanging. They cannot be more than 24 inches wide or exceed 400 square inches overall. Small sketches can be exhibited as stand-alone posters. Members must arrange for hand delivery and pick-up of their panels. The AGG cannot be responsible for any aspect of shipping on either end. Objects are displayed at exhibitors' risk. An auction will be held to benefit the AGG's James Whitney Scholarship Fund which provides support for training, workshops and conference attendance both in the US and abroad. Information on previous recipients is posted on the AGG website, where this year's application (due April 15, 2008) can be downloaded. Past donations to the auction have included books, stained-glass panels, glass, tools, wine and more. A selection of auction items will be posted on the website.
