Subject: ICOM-CC Art Technological Source Research Conference
Study and Serendipity: Testimonies of Artists' Practice ATSR 3rd International Symposium History of Art Department, Glasgow University, Scotland 12-13 June 2008 After two successful symposia in Amsterdam and Madrid, the ICOM-CC working group Art Technological Source Research is organising its third international symposium, in cooperation with the History of Art Department at Glasgow University, Scotland. The primary aim of the ATSR Working Group is to establish a focus for historical documentary source research on art materials and techniques, and to encourage interdisciplinary projects between different fields such as conservation, art history, history of economy, and conservation science. Reconstructions, a natural follow-on from the collection of information on materials and their use, are an essential part of these projects as well. Regular consultation with art historians, conservators and museum professionals indicates a clear and present need for an increased body of accessible contemporary documentary sources on art technology. The ATSR aims to be a platform for the exchange and dissemination of information on art technological sources and to systemize the tools and techniques for this type of research. The papers presented at this 3rd conference center on the exploration of artists' practice from a wide range of disciplines and periods, as recorded in visual and written testimonies; from treatises and manuals to correspondence, ledgers, diaries and journals, as well as images: paintings, prints, photographs, film etc. The study of these often illuminating sources on artists' techniques in support of art historical and conservation research is key to the conference. There is some emphasis on the 18th century, a period so far little studied in this context. The conference papers as well as the posters and demonstrations, hope to provide a springboard for much new research, new approaches in methodology, and the disclosure of so far unpublished documentary sources. We hope to bring together not only members of the ATSR working-group but welcome and encourage all interested in art technological source to attend what is promising to be an interesting meeting. The conference will be in English.
