The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is located
in the picturesque village of Sigri, in the western edge of Lesvos
Island, the third biggest Greek island. It was founded in 1994,
aiming to study, research, appoint, preserve, conserve and protect
the Petrified Forest, which covers a large part of the western
peninsula of the island. The Petrified Forest was created 20 million
years ago, due to the intense volcanic activity in the area. Apart
from the museum, where mobile findings (trunks, roots, branches,
fruit, leaves etc) are kept, several outdoor parks have been
created, in the most important fossil-bearing locations.
