Workshop
History of bookbinding techniques: Part V (out of VI): Renaissance
    and later (1500-1800)

The Renaissance binding technique is strongly influenced by
cultural, economical and geographical developments. The early
Renaissance wood cover binding is a decorative refinement of the
Gothic technique. The invention of the printing process asked for
faster production and lighter materials. Time-saving binding
techniques using cardboard were developed during this period. The
course is composed of lectures with double slide projection based on
the research of Prof. Janos A. Szirmai and hands-on practical work.
Each participant will do one or two sample-bindings.

Some information about Barbara Hassel:

    1994-1998 Head of the workshop of the department for book and
    paper conservation at the State Academy of Art and Design
    Stuttgart

    1999-2001 Master study at the Konservatorskolen at the Royal
    Danish Academy of fine Arts in Copenhagen with Diploma

    Present occupation: Since 1998 free-lance conservator with own
    workshop in book and paper conservation

    Special fields: Wooden board bindings, parchment manuscripts and
    seals history of bookbinding techniques

    Teaching assignments in history of the book and bookbinding
    techniques
