Historical endpapers and backing methods
centro del bel libro ascona
7-10 April 2008

Luise Karl will share her sample collection of historical endpapers
which are based on years of professional work and collecting
historical data from books from the 8th to the 20th century. The
participants will assemble their own endpaper sample collection and
learn about their integration in the bound book. Also the historical
(and conservation) backing methods will be pointed out.

This course will help participants to become more confident in
dating the binding, in the decision making on what to do when the
endpaper is missing and what treatment to apply to make the endpaper
function but still keeping its historical integrity.

The present occupation of Luise Karl: Since 1991 head conservator at
the Institute for Book and Manuscript Conservation at the Bavarian
State Library in Munich, Germany. Professor for book conservation at
the Fachakademie zur Ausbildung von Restauratoren at the Bavarian
State Library in Munich. Her special fields: Book conservation.
Binding structures from the early medieval times to modern times.
Jewel bindings and miniature conservation.
