Subject: Historical endpapers and backing methods
Workshop Historical endpapers and backing methods centro del bel libro ascona 7-10 April 2008 Luise Karl will share her sample collection of historical endpapers which are based on years of professional work and collecting historical data from books from the 8th to the 20th century. The participants will assemble their own endpaper sample collection and learn about their integration in the bound book. Also the historical (and conservation) backing methods will be pointed out. This course will help participants to become more confident in dating the binding, in the decision making on what to do when the endpaper is missing and what treatment to apply to make the endpaper function but still keeping its historical integrity. The present occupation of Luise Karl: Since 1991 head conservator at the Institute for Book and Manuscript Conservation at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, Germany.
