Conservation Assistant Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA) Regular Full Time Position The Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA), a regional not-for-profit art conservation center established in 1952, is seeking a highly skilled Conservation Assistant to join our conservation lab located on the Westside of Cleveland, just minutes from downtown. The conservation assistant will work under the supervision of the objects conservators, and prepare three dimensional objects and artwork for display and storage using conservation-quality methods and materials. S/he will also assist objects conservators with lab duties including ordering all necessary lab materials, paperwork, and client services. Primary Job Duties: Perform basic conservation treatments under direction of the objects conservators using conservation-quality techniques and materials. Willing to work off-site sometimes overnight or for extended periods of time. Under supervision of the conservators, create estimates, proposals, condition and treatment reports for projects. Consult directly with clients regarding conservation of their objects. Secondary Job Duties: Construct protective enclosures for re-housing, pack artwork for shipping or delivery to client. Deliver and install artwork on-site as necessary. Assist objects conservators and other staff as necessary. Maintain the lab, prepare chemicals and materials, and assist with special projects. May assist objects conservators with a broad range of preservation and conservation related activities, such as structural repairs, surface cleaning, and inpainting, dependent on demonstrated manual skills, desire for learning and/or knowledge in area. Order and maintain inventory of lab supplies. Help to maintain organization and cleanliness of lab space. Minimum Requirements: Bachelors degree (preferably in an arts-related field) or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Demonstrated superior manual skills and ability to work with high degree of precision/accuracy. Excellent communication skills. Ability to follow directions, work independently, and maintain established quality standards. Strong organization skills, including ability to work within established priorities and work collaboratively. Knowledge of conservation-quality methods and materials preferred. Demonstrated ability to work knowledgeably and independently on a variety of materials. Training and/or experience in the care and handling of three-dimensional objects; interest/knowledge in preservation preferred. Interest and knowledge in material culture and historic techniques of production. Familiarity with computers is necessary, especially Microsoft applications.
