From: Helene Telford <h.telford<-a>
Date: Monday, January 7, 2008
Assistant Technology Conservator
National Museums Scotland

UKP19,210 - UKP23,245 per annum plus membership of Civil Service
pension scheme

We are seeking a highly practical conservator who has proven
hands-on engineering skills, to join our Engineering and Furniture
Conservation team. National Museums Scotland has a wide range of
collections. It has active acquisition, loan and special exhibition
programmes, and is developing the galleries in all five of its
museums. This post will be involved in many of these areas,
supporting the full appreciation and accessibility of objects from
our collections, particularly work on medium and large technological
items.

Ideally, we expect a recognised relevant professional qualification
in conservation, or equivalent from practical training. However,
given the variety of training routes in this area, your background
could be in a relevant technological discipline or apprenticeship,
together with some experience in conservation. As well as excellent
hand and machine skills, you will have a good practical
understanding of materials and treatments and you will be able to
show evidence of expanding your knowledge of these. You will be
aware of professional issues relevant to the post and best practice.
You will be adept at problem solving, able to manage your time and
work, alone or with others, to meet deadlines, and will have good
communication and ICT skills.

We are looking for a self-motivated person who can make a real
contribution to the conservation of the technology collections.
These collections encompass: industrial, steam, transport,
agricultural, aviation, and scientific instrument artefacts. A
particular area of work will be in maintaining the working exhibits
on display in the museum galleries, particularly at the Chambers
Street site. This post will involve occasional working at heights
and a degree of manual handling. You may undertake work at any of
the National Museums Scotland sites and a driving licence is
essential.
