Aircraft and Technology Conservator
National Museums Scotland

UKP22,911 - UKP27,042 per annum plus membership of Civil Service
pension scheme

We are seeking an excellent practical conservator who has proven
hands-on aviation/engineering skills, to join our Engineering and
Furniture Conservation team. National Museums Scotland has a wide
range of collections. It has active acquisition, loan and special
exhibition programmes, and is developing the galleries in all five
of its museums. This post will be involved in many of these areas,
supporting the full appreciation and accessibility of objects from
our collections, particularly work on aircraft and associated
technology.

You will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant
subject, ideally with a recognised professional qualification in
conservation, or equivalent from practical training, and proven
relevant work experience. However, given the variety of training
routes in this area, your background could be in a relevant aviation
technology discipline or apprenticeship, together with experience in
conservation. As well as proven hands-on engineering and mechanical
handling skills, you will have a practical understanding of
materials and treatments and you will be able to show evidence of
expanding your knowledge of these. You will be informed and
knowledgeable about current aviation conservation practices and able
to implement these, both directly and through supervision of others.

A good communicator, you will be organised, methodical and adept at
problem solving. You will have ability and, ideally, experience in
managing staff and volunteers, and will have good ICT skills. We are
looking for a self-motivated person who can make a real contribution
to the conservation of the aviation technology collections. This
post will involve occasional working at heights and a degree of
manual handling. You may undertake work at any of the National
Museums Scotland sites and a driving licence is essential.
