Subject: Symposium on video conservation
"Copy-Digitise-Restore? Strategies for the conservation of video" Symposium NRW-Forum imai - inter media art institute Dusseldorf 7-8 December 2006 The preservation and conservation of video is no longer and not only one of the main concerns of broadcasting and distributing companies, but it is also of increased relevance for artists, curators and conservators. Preserving a video artwork according to the artistic intent is very challenging. How can reasonable solutions be found? The complexity of conserving a video installation is posing questions regarding the registration of all data needed to preserve an artwork in its entirety and it is dependent on all its components. Therefore, the program covers subjects like long-term preservation and use of hardware, the conservation and restoration of videotapes and will also include discussions about the ethics of digital restoration in moving images. The invited speakers are professionals from Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and the Unites States who have strived to find new approaches to the problems in this field, and successfully found them on a practical level. These different approaches to fundamental ethical questions, possibilities of the identification of deterioration and restoration of videotapes, as well as to various archiving, documenting and restoration practices shall be presented and discussed. Simultaneous translation as well as refreshments will be provided.
