Metals Conservator
Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah
Kuwait

Initial 3 month contract with the possibility of extending to a year.

Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah is an internationally renowned collection
of Islamic Art based in Kuwait. The collection is currently in
store but there are plans for the museum to be open to the public in
the near future.

A team of conservators look after the collection mostly on a
part-time or short contract basis. We are now looking for a
conservator to work on the metal collection for an initial 3 month
period with the possibility of extending it to 1 year. A catalogue
of the metal collection is being written and many of the objects
require cleaning, treating and some repair for photography and
examination. Investigations into the metal structure and technology
may be required, in which case the conservator would be required to
manage this research programme, not necessarily to carry out the
work.

The metal collection is predominantly bronze material, much of which
is archaeological. The conservator is required to work with the
curators and other team members in developing a programme of work
for the collection. He/she will have day-to-day responsibility for
the hands-on treatment of each object and, as part of a team, will
be assisting in the overall care of the metals collection. He/she
may also be required to train staff in aspects of metal conservation
and collection care.

The conservator should have a recognised qualification in
conservation, preferably with experience in the conservation of
ancient metal work. He/she should also possess good organisational
skills, be able to work to deadlines, and display teamwork skills.
In addition, he/she must be self motivated and flexible, have
excellent written and verbal communication skills and computer
skills.
