New-York Historical Society

The New-York Historical Society is seeking a full-time or two
part-time Conservation Assistant(s) to work with the Library
conservation staff. The Conservation Assistant will: assist in the
examination, preparation, treatment, installation, and
de-installation of library and museum paper-based collections for
exhibitions and loans; assist in the movement, stabilization,
repair, and re-housing of heavy, sometimes dusty, fragile and
oversized library and museum paper-based materials; compose and
enter condition and treatment reports, surveys and inventories into
a computer database as directed by the conservators; and prepare
books for commercial binding.

Qualifications:  B.A. in the humanities or related field; ability to
operate specialized equipment, such as an ultrasonic welder, board
shear, fume hood, and humidification chamber; good manual dexterity,
word-processing, database, and digital imaging software skills;
ability to work independently and cooperatively; ability to work
productively in deadline-oriented activities; strong sense of
organization and workspace cleanliness.

Preferred:  book or paper conservation-related experience in a
private workshop or institutional lab; library or museum experience.
A manual dexterity test may be administered as part of the
interview. Applicants are encouraged to provide examples of their
completed work.

Position open:  1 November 2006
Salary:  Full time: $31,000-33,000, depending on background and
experience

Part-time:  $17-$23/hour, depending on background and experience
