British Museum

At the British Museum, Conservation Scientists undertake research
and other investigations into the deterioration, conservation,
technology and storage of artefacts and materials in our
collections. They also provide scientific services within the aims
of the Museum, and disseminate results and information through
reports, publication and lecturing etc.

Your main duties will include being the specialist scientist in the
deterioration and conservation of natural and modern polymeric
organic artefacts and materials. You will develop new projects
within the Museum and CDS research strategies, as well as
participating in the development of research collaborations with
external museums and HE partners. You will be responsible for the
management and development of analytical facilities for the
examination of natural and modern polymeric organic artefacts and
materials, specifically FT-IR and SPME, and use of GC-MS. You will
also contribute to the delivery of Museum-wide projects such as
exhibitions, new object stores, catalogues and excavation reports.
Additionally, you will participate in the analysis of materials in
response to conservation and curatorial enquiry, as well as
lecturing and publishing in your own specialist area.

You will have a degree and PhD in chemistry or polymer science, as
well as experience in the analysis of modern organic museum
artefacts or polymeric materials e.g. fibres, cellulose, paper, pvc,
pva etc. You may have experience in a university or museum where you
will have carried out investigations on organic materials.

The salary for this post is UKP21,146 or UKP24,476 (The higher
salary will be commensurate with knowledge, skills and
qualifications).
