Archives Conservation Specialist 3, SG-23
Location:  Albany, NY
Salary:  $57,606 (Leads to a maximum salary of $70,932 based on
annual performance advances)

    The New York State Archives is seeking to fill a position of
    Archives Conservation Specialist 3 (ACS 3) who will be
    responsible for the preservation of the collections of the New
    York State Archives, including those in electronic and
    multimedia formats.  The ACS 3 will manage programs to preserve
    archival holdings through needs assessment, environmental
    control, holdings maintenance, disaster preparedness,
    reformatting and conservation.  Duties include but are not
    limited to the following:

        *   Develop policies, procedures, and plans for preserving
            archival records in all formats, including electronic
            and multimedia;

        *   Identify priorities for preservation action and develop
            and implement preservation plans that both target the
            most vulnerable collections and address user needs;

        *   Oversee collection stewardship activities, including
            environmental monitoring, holdings maintenance and
            storage, and disaster preparedness and response;

        *   Oversee in-house conservation and reformatting
            operations, ensuring that all operations meet relevant
            standards and best practices;

        *   Acquire and coordinate outside services as necessary;
            write contract specifications and coordinate all
            collections conservation and reformatting provided
            through contractual services;

        *   Write grant proposals and direct grant-funded projects
            that advance collections preservation and access;

        *   Develop in-house capacity for the transfer of common
            formats

        *   Work in teams to improve stewardship of collections
            across the NYS Library, the NYS Archives, and the NYS
            Museum;

        *   Provide technical assistance to agencies and local
            governments to help them protect records in their
            custody.

    Minimum qualifications:  Master's degree in Archival
    Administration, Archival Science, Library and Information
    Science, or History WITH a certificate in Preservation
    Management from an accredited conservation training program; or
    a Master's degree in Paper Conservation from an accredited
    conservation training program; AND four (4) years of experience
    in an archives or historical records repository preservation
    program, TWO years of which must have included supervising staff
    or managing one or more areas of the preservation program or
    function.

Archives and Records Management Specialist 2, SG-18
Location:  Albany, NY
Salary:  $44,313 (Leads to a maximum salary of $55,154 based on
annual performance advances)

    The New York State Archives seeks an Archives and Records
    Management Specialist 2 (ARMS 2) to serve as the Preservation
    Archivist.  The ARMS 2 is responsible for the preservation of
    born-digital media, through refreshing, forward migration, and
    conversion of electronic and multimedia collections.  The ARMS 2
    will supervise the re-housing of collections in all formats and
    the development of container lists to comply with archival
    standards and to help users find information in the Archives'
    collections.  Duties include, but are not limited to the
    following:

        *   Implement preservation processes on born digital
            collections, including text files, images, databases,
            websites, and GIS systems;

        *   Manage computerized collection assessment and management
            systems and participate in the administration of the
            Archives inventory/tracking system;

        *   Oversee the re-housing of collections and the
            development of container lists and other access tools;

        *   On a project basis and in conjunction with Access
            Services, supervise scanning of selected records;

        *   Supervise processing team; monitor work in progress,
            evaluate final products, including finding aids and
            re-housed collections, and document staff effort and
            collection status and needs;

        *   Order and inventory management of all supplies used in
            processing collections;

        *   Coordinate cross-unit processing project planning;

        *   Participate in disaster preparedness program.

    Minimum qualifications:  Master's degree in archival
    administration, archival science, library and information
    science, history, government, public administration, political
    science or American studies; OR a bachelor's degree in any of
    the above fields, including or supplemented by 15 credit hours
    in history, 9 of which must have been in American history, AND
    three years of experience in which the preponderance of duties
    involved one or more of the following: archival appraisal,
    arrangement and description or preservation; providing reference
    services in an organization whose primary focus is archival
    services; providing educational programs or technical assistance
    in the administration of archival records; or conducting a
    historical records grant program.
