Position at British Museum

From: Richard Burillo <rburillo>
Date: Monday, September 4, 2006
Heavy Object Handler
UKP16,320 - UKP20,697 pa
Central London

The role is placed within the Department of Conservation,
Documentation and Science. This is a pivotal department within the
Museum, which works to preserve, document, examine and analyse
artefacts in the collection. As Heavy Object Handler, you'll ensure
that large and heavy artefacts are moved safely and efficiently.

You'll be a member of a developing team working for the Senior Heavy
Object Handler. Much of the work is generated by the Museum's
extensive loans programme, both nationally and internationally, and
you will be instrumental in the success of this important museum
activity. As you develop your skills, it is likely that you will
courier loans both in the UK and abroad. Additionally, you'll
install large/heavy objects in museum exhibitions and assist with
storage projects. Your handling, packing and moving skills and
attention to conservation standards will ensure that the work is
performed safely, both for personnel and artefacts, in a complex and
busy environment. You'll help the Senior Heavy Object Handler to
co-ordinate and deliver the work of the team to meet the programmed
needs of the Museum, as well as assisting with the development and
maintenance of standards in the safe movement of the collections.

It is essential that you have experience of moving heavy
artefacts/antiquities in a museum or gallery environment, knowledge
and experience of moving equipment and hold a valid fork lift
driving licence. You'll be an effective team worker, but also show
an aptitude for independent self-management and decision making.
Good communication skills are essential for success in this post.
