Conservation of fans The centro del bel libro ascona 4-8 September, 2006 Teacher: Martina Noehles Fans--enchanting objects! The three dimensional quality, the multilayered functionality, the variety of materials and their combination make fans a wonderful challenge for every conservator. The materials that are combined in a fan can be: Paper, parchment, leather, silk, ivory, bamboo, cedar wood, nacre, tortoise shell etc. This course will introduce participants to the history and terminology of fans as well as to the variety of materials and shapes of fans. Documentation methods and how to outline damages will be presented. The practical part of the course will focus on fans made from paper, leather and parchment. Treatments will include cleaning, old repair and tape removal, mending tears, filling losses as well as inpainting--depending on the degree of damage to the available fans. Participants are encouraged to bring fans to work on, preferably made from paper, leather or parchment.
