4-8 September, 2006
Teacher: Martina Noehles

Fans--enchanting objects! The three dimensional quality, the
multilayered functionality, the variety of materials and their
combination make fans a wonderful challenge for every conservator.
The materials that are combined in a fan can be: Paper, parchment,
leather, silk, ivory, bamboo, cedar wood, nacre, tortoise shell etc.

This course will introduce participants to the history and
terminology of fans as well as to the variety of materials and
shapes of fans. Documentation methods and how to outline damages
will be presented.

The practical part of the course will focus on fans made from paper,
leather and parchment. Treatments will include cleaning, old repair
and tape removal, mending tears, filling losses as well as
inpainting--depending on the degree of damage to the available fans.
Participants are encouraged to bring fans to work on, preferably
made from paper, leather or parchment.
