Subject: Conference on installation art
"Artist Participation in the Preservation of Installation Art" Seminar Organised by S.M.A.K. "Het Pand" Onderbergen 1 9000 Ghent Belgium Thursday, 19 October 2006 The seminar is part of the European project Inside Installations: Preservation and Presentation of Installation Art. It is organised by the conservation department of the S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) and is hosted in "Het Pand", Ghent. This seminar will focus on the topic Artist Participation. In the presentation and conservation of installation artworks, the voice of the artist is of major importance. Artists often have their own idiosyncratic means to communicate information, precisely because this information is related to the peculiar characteristics of their work. To find the right way to conserve and present the installation artworks in the future, a co-operation takes place between the artist and the museum. Sometimes only one person is responsible for this research process, in other cases a structure or people-network is set up and a certain form for communication is selected. Data collecting methods, such as observation, participation, interaction analyses, in-depth interviewing, questionnaires and surveys, are part of this practice. Several results of co-operations between artists, conservation researchers and museums will be presented on this seminar. Professionals with experiences in interviewing artists are sharing their knowledge and a general frame will be given from out of the field of anthropology. The final programme will be announced at the beginning of September, 2006 at <URL:http://www.incca.org> and <URL:http://www.smak.be> To attend, please reply before Monday 2, October 2006 by sending mail to: Anne De Buck Conservation researcher S.M.A.K.
