VIDA volunteers (Volunteers for International Development from
Australia) is seeking applications from qualified and experienced
Australian paper conservators to work at the National Library of
Vietnam in Hanoi.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the conservation
treatment of significant and historic paper based artworks from the
collection of the National Library of Vietnam.   Treatment of the
artworks will be prioritised in preparation for a major Millennium
exhibition to take place in 2010, when the National Library of
Vietnam will contribute important items from its collection to
celebrate 1000 years since the founding of city of Hanoi.

Volunteering for International Development from Australia (VIDA) is
Australia's newest international volunteer program. VIDA is part of
the Australian Volunteer Program (AVP), managed by AusAID
(Australian Agency for International Development) on behalf of the
government. There are two other organizations funded under the AVP--
Australian Volunteers International and Australian Business
Volunteers.

The paper conservator will make an important contribution to the
preservation of fragile paper based artefacts, including ancient
texts, scrolls and other important documents.  During the placement
the paper conservator will be responsible for training Vietnamese
local staff in conservation practices and simple treatments, and for
developing and implementing strategic conservation management plans
for the library.

Australian citizens only. There is no age limit for applicants for
the VIDA program.

The Centre of the Conservation of Cultural Materials (CCMC) at The
University of Melbourne is the Australian Partner Organisation (APO)
for this position.  This position has been developed as part of
CCMC's continuing outreach program of delivery of conservation
