The New York Botanical Garden

Assistant Conservator (full time)

    The Assistant Conservator will participate in overall
    preservation/conservation activities for all Library and
    Archives collection materials; assist Conservation
    Librarian/Conservator with supervision and training of staff and
    volunteers that carry out work; and prepare and install
    exhibitions of library materials.

    Duties and Responsibilities: plans and carries out appropriate
    procedures and techniques for examining, documenting, treating,
    surveying, exhibiting and housing books, paper and other
    artifacts form the Library's collections.  Prepares and installs
    materials for exhibitions and loans.  Assists Conservation
    Librarian/Conservator in: planning and implementing surveys,
    special projects and conservation treatment; preparing grants
    and reports; supervising grant project tasks; preparing and
    carrying out tasks related to Library disaster preparedness;
    training and supervising Conservation Technicians and Interns;
    educating other Library staff and users in conservation issues.
    Carries out environmental monitoring of all Library spaces.
    Keeps inventory and orders supplies; evaluates equipment for
    maintenance. Participates in professional
    preservation/conservation organizations.

    Qualifications:  Graduate degree in conservation of books and/or
    archival library materials, and/or equivalent training and
    experience (e.g. formal apprenticeship).  Minimum of 2 years
    post-internship in a conservation program, preferably in a
    research library.  Demonstrated skills with a wide variety of
    treatment, binding, and repair techniques required.  A portfolio
    of treatments is required of all applicants. Knowledge of
    current conservation principles and practices, chemistry,
    environmental monitoring, book and paper history, materials and
    construction.  Ability to work independently and to work well
    with staff at all levels required.  Effective written and verbal
    communications skills necessary.  Computer skills desirable.
    Accredited MLS degree preferred.  Salary commensurate with
    experience.

Conservation Technician (part-time)

    The Conservation Technician will perform collection preservation
    tasks such as book and paper repairs, pamphlet binding,
    protective enclosures and environmental monitoring; will assist
    in the preparation, installation, maintenance and dismounting of
    exhibitions; will prepare materials, maintain the Lab and
    exhibition cases, and assist with special projects.

    BA or the equivalent degree; demonstrated manual skills;
    training and/or experience in the care and handling of books and
    other museum objects; must be able to lift items in excess of 20
    lbs; experience with exhibition/display and/or interest in
    preservation as a career preferred.  Salary commensurate with
    experience.
