Conservation Internships
The British Library

The British Library is pleased to offer its first funded internship
in book conservation. The internship is funded by the Heritage
Lottery Fund and will take place from 6 November 2006 to 28
September 2007. We are seeking to offer this internship to a recent
graduate with book conservation qualifications (an MA in book
conservation would be desirable) who wishes to improve their
practical skills. The successful candidate will be selected on the
basis of conservation knowledge in relation to the projects
available, conservation abilities, a commitment to professional
ethics as laid out in the ECCO Guidelines and Code of Ethics,
effective communication skills, and an understanding of library and
archival collections.

The internship is full time and a UKP10,000 bursary is available. As
funding for the internship is through the Heritage Lottery Fund in
the UK, only UK citizens may apply.

The Internship will consist of two main projects: The Writing
Tablets Project (volumes which have printed pages, and specially
treated leaves) and The Almanacs Project. There will also be other
conservation projects which will supplement these.

For both projects, the intern will be expected to prepare and
evaluate a project plan, and determine the next stages of the
treatment process. At the end of the project, the intern will
produce a written report and deliver a presentation of their work.

Please note that the intern will be supervised by a British Library
conservator throughout their internship and work will be monitored
on a regular basis.
