Subject: ALA Discussion Group
Seeking Anecdotes for ALA Discussion Group The Collection Development and Curators and Conservators Discussion Groups for the Rare Book and Manuscript Division will be holding a joint meeting at American Library Association' annual meeting in a few weeks. We are focusing our discussion on the preservation issues that must be considered when accepting (or refusing all or parts of) a collection, as well as the role of conservators in evaluating the cost of conservation treatment of a collection prior to its arrival. Lastly, how may this evaluation impact the price of the collection or, if it is a gift, on the contract signed with the donor? In anticipation, we are requesting examples of existing documentation or anecdotes relating to this topic from other institutions from both preservation and special collections staff. Please reply to Jennifer Hain Teper (jhain [at] uiuc__edu) with any suggestions, documentation, practices or experiences (good, bad and ugly) that could aid in our examination of this topic *by June 20, 2006*.
