Collection Manager Sharjah Museums Term: Two year contract Reporting to: Director Sharjah Museums Management Authority Staff responsible for: Assistants as appointed. Salary: Package from 190,000 UAE dirhams, including accommodation allowance Purpose: Responsible for advising the Director SMMA on, and leading or assisting in, the management and care of collections of Sharjah Museums. Responsible for identifying areas of key collection management and care needs, and researching and recommending options to address those areas. Managing planning and implementation processes as required. Tasks: Advises the Director SMMA on areas of key needs in the management and care of collections for Sharjah Museums, and researches and advises on options for addressing those areas in the short, medium and long term. Advises on and drafts corporate collection management policies such as Documentation and Care of Collections policies. Advises on and assists in drafting collection management and care of collection plans, procedural documents and standards documentation that devolve from the corporate collection management and care policies. Advises on and drafts job descriptions for building, facilities and collection management staff positions. Advises on and as required drafts budgets for achieving care of collection outcomes. Advises on the development of collection management training programmes. Designs and delivers collection management and care training sessions. Advises and assists with programmes to implement management and collection care procedures and practices in line with corporate policies and standards. Advises in other areas of museum operations, to better align museum practices with SMMA strategic directions and standards. Represents the Director SMMA at meetings, forums, on committees etc as required or approved by the Director. Participates in events organised by the museum, the SMMA or other organisations, that foster public interest in the museum or culture and heritage more generally Other activities as required by the Director SMMA. Selection Criteria: Essential: Skills/experience: Extensive and demonstrable knowledge of museums and collection care and management operations. Demonstrated experience in reviewing museum operations and providing cogent and informed advice and recommendations on those programmes. Demonstrated experience in planning and development of collection care and management policies. Experience in developing or advising on development of collection care and management documents such as procedures, plans and standards. Highly developed and wide ranging written and verbal communications skills. Literate in general computer applications (eg. Word, Excel). Experience in establishing and operating conservation laboratory facilities to meet deadlines and budgets and to meet high standards of health and safety. Demonstrated capacity to work under own motivation and unsupervised for periods. Problem solving skills and initiative. Ability to work productively in teams. Demonstrated cultural sensitivity. Fluent in English. You will be working with an international team whose first language is not English. Qualifications: A degree/qualification relevant to management of collections or materials conservation Desirable: An understanding of Islamic and Arab culture and practices. The work environment for this position is multicultural and multilingual. Sharjah Museums Management Authority is leading the museums of Sharjah. The Sharjah Museums Management Authority is a new organisation established by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to oversee and link the current and future museums of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The Sharjah Museums cover the arts, Islamic culture and history, heritage and history of Sharjah and the region, archaeology, science and natural history. With the establishment of the Sharjah Museums Management Authority under the Directorship of Sue Underwood, the museums will enter an exciting period of refocus and renewal. We are now recruiting for a number of 1 and 2 year posts. The Sharjah Art Museum is the largest art museum in the Gulf region. The Archaeological Museum has one of the finest collections of archaeological materials in the Gulf. The Heritage Museums comprise several museums housed in traditional houses in the Old Sharjah precinct. The Classic Cars Museum is newly completed and will open in 2006. The new Islamic Museum is being developed now with a completion target of April 2007. The Natural History Museum has a soon to be opened Botanic Museum wing and shares the Desert Park with the Arabian Wildlife Centre.
