As the head of the Conservation Unit, the Collections Care
Conservator establishes priorities; makes treatment decisions;
maintains workflow; supervises and trains staff, students, and
interns; oversees daily operations of the conservation lab;
maintains quality control; performs appropriate treatments on
general collections and Special Collections and Archives materials
(including but not limited to books, manuscripts, photographs, glass
slides and negatives, art on paper, artifacts); works with private
conservators when out-sourcing conservation treatment is necessary;
and provides assistance in Special Collections. Assists the Head of
Preservation in training, education and outreach for Library staff,
other practitioners, and citizens of Iowa; assists in developing,
coordinating and implementing preservation programs.  The
responsibilities of this position will require exceptional
organizational, analytical, interpersonal, communication, and time
and project management skills.

Required:  Master's degree in library and information science,
conservation or related field and one year of related experience
with specialization in book and paper conservation. A related
bachelor's degree and three years of related experience may be
substituted. Computer and keyboarding skills and working knowledge
of applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and
graphic design software.

Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge and skill in conservation of
special collections and general collections library and archives
materials, including the relevant chemistry and conservation theory,
problem-solving and decision making skills, and the technical skills
to carry out and document complex treatments. Current knowledge of
preservation operations and issues in a research library
environment, including special and general collections conservation,
environmental monitoring, disaster response, digital preservation,
library binding and reformatting (both analog and digital formats).
Experience designing and updating web pages, and creating digital
objects.

Terms and Benefits:  Professional and Scientific position. Minimum
salary $35,089; commensurate with qualifications.  Excellent
