Project Manager, Collections Catalog Duplication American Museum of Natural History The American Museum of Natural History seeks a project manager to oversee the day-to-day operation of a grant-funded project to duplicate historical data and information held in the Museum's collection catalogs for purposes of long-term preservation. The collection catalogs contain close to 750,000 primary catalog cards and 130,000 pages in ledgers many of of which only exist in hard copy format within the Museum. The information contained within these catalogs is vital to the mission of the Museum in that they act to list the objects/specimens in the collection and identify what it is, where it came from and when it was collected. The goals of this project are: * Convert the primary catalog records and ledgers into digital images * Transfer digital images to microfilm (COM) for archival storage * Store the microfilm and a copy of the digital images in a secure, off-site location In collaboration with the Project Team, the Project Manager will: * Develop and monitor the conversion workplan and timeline. * Assist in development of detailed scanning specifications * Identify potential vendors; prepare and evaluate RFPs * Coordinate on site set-up with appropriate museum personnel * Coordinate delivery of materials to scanning area from scientific departments; ensure adequate security before, during and after scanning * Work with vendor to ensure proper handling of source documents and that digital images meet specification * Monitor throughput and costs; prepare regular reports on project progress * Develop and coordinate post-scanning workflow for digital images post-scanning, including quality control, transfer to COM vendor, transfer to Museum network Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent experience Demonstrated knowledge of digital imaging practices and standards Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Supervisory or project management experience Preferred: Ability to develop or implement automated routines to facilitate project tasks Knowledge of library preservation issues and experience handling rare and fragile materials Please send letter of interest and CV by April 17, 2006 to projectmanager [at] amnh__org Lisa Kronthal Conservator of Natural Sciences Collections Office of the Associate Dean of Science for Collections American Museum of Natural History 79th Street at Central Park West New York, New York 10024 212-313-7035 Fax: 212-769-5239 *** Conservation DistList Instance 19:46 Distributed: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Message Id: cdl-19-46-023 ***Received on Monday, 20 March, 2006
