Conservator, Works of Art on Paper
The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki

The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki invites applications for the
position of Conservator, Works of art on Paper.

This is a fixed term contract for the period of one year. The
Conservator would be expected to work as part of a team comprising
of 2 full-time painting conservators and two part-time conservators
(painting and paper), as well as a part-time conservation assistant.
The present incumbent of the position will be on maternity leave for
a year from May 15 2006 and so it is intended that this contract
should commence at the beginning of May 2006 to allow for some
crossover between staff.

Responsibilities of the position include the conservation of works
of art on paper from the Auckland Art Gallery's permanent
collections, as well as work generated by the Gallery's exhibitions
programmes and Regional Conservation service.

The Conservator, Works of art on Paper, is responsible to the
Principal Conservator who coordinates the activities of the
Department.

Requirements:

    *   Highly motivated and capable of contributing to planning and
        implementing of a conservation programme
    *   A recognised qualification in conservation
    *   A good understanding of cultural conservation principles and
        ethics
    *   Relevant conservation work experience
    *   Excellent oral and written communication skills

The Auckland Art Gallery was first established in 1888 and is New
Zealand's oldest established gallery located in the inner city on
the edge of Albert Park.  There are two exhibition spaces, the
historic Main Building, and its contemporary annex, the New Gallery.
The Auckland Art Gallery will be undergoing a major redevelopment
commencing at the end of 2006 and the staff and collections will be
relocated.  A temporary paper conservation studio will be set up in
a building 5 minutes walk away.  The New Gallery will function as
the sole exhibition space during this period and preparation for the
opening exhibitions for the new building will be a priority.  More
