Michigan State University Libraries has an opening for a grant
funded 1.5-year assistant conservator position.  Position will
commence no sooner than June 1, 2006. Please refer to the posting

Conservator Salary: $35,042 Minimum

Required:  Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be
acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in book
conservation or related field; one to three years of related and
progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a
conservation lab setting, knowledge of current book and paper
conservation techniques (especially in the treatments noted in the
"Basic Functions" below), and have an understanding of basic
conservation principles; proficiency using conservation equipment
and tools; excellent communication and decision-making skills and
ability to work independently.  Applicant must provide a portfolio
of completed treatment work at time of interview.

Desired:  Experience with database, spreadsheet, and word processing
software, library automation system.

Basic Functions: Processes library materials requiring a high degree
of discrimination and independent judgment; examines, treats,
deacidifies, rehouses, and documents MSU Libraries' early American
schoolbook collection of over 1,500 textbooks and Sunday school
books; under the guidance of the head conservator, the incumbent
will perform a variety of conservation treatments, including (but
not limited to) cloth rebacks, board reattachments, rebinding,
washing and mending of pages, and sewing of text blocks; will
include extensive documentation in a custom on-line database,
including photo-documentation; manages vendor accounts for
deacidification and rehousing needs. This is an off-date position
funded for one and a half years from date of hire.
