Subject: Call for papers--Archaeological metal finds
Call For Papers Archaeological Metal Finds - from excavation to exhibition Conference to be held in Mannheim from October 12-13 2006 Organised by the Archaeological Objects working group in the "Verband der Restauratoren" (VDR) and the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums Mannheim The conference will focus on archaeological metal finds as one of the most valuable sources of information in archaeology. Metal finds, often being in a poor condition as well as coming in vast quantities, represent a great challenge to the conservator/restorer who has to find appropriate ways of preserving them for future generations. As methods employed to achieve this are constantly evolving, it would be worthwhile getting together for a review. The conference aims to bring together a diverse group of professionals including conservators/restorers, excavation technicians, archaeologists and natural/conservation scientists. The goal is to establish a stronger link between conservation practice and archaeometrical investigation. The subjects are: Dealing with metal finds on site Intermediate and long-term storage, packaging Dealing with vast quantities of finds Conservation, chloride extraction Restoration, removal of corrosion crusts Limits in conservation/restoration Composite objects Long-term experience with conservation/restoration methods and storage systems Archaeometric investigation Exhibitions, public engagement in conservation We invite papers which either deal with the theoretical background or report on practical solutions. Contributions can either be presented as papers or as posters. Paper presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. Short presentations of 5-10 minutes are also welcome. The conference will be held in German and English (no simultaneous translation planned). We would like to invite you to contribute to our conference with your experience and special knowledge. Contributions by students or short reports by professionals on their experience with different methods and materials would be most welcome. Please send your abstract of c. 250 words together with your details and a brief outline of your professional background by 9 April 2006 to: VDR - Archaeological Objects working group Martin Hoepfner Museen der Stadt Aschaffenburg Schlossplatz 4 D - 63739 Aschaffenburg (Germany) +49 6021 4511720 Fax: +49 6021 4535000 martinhoepfner [at] gmx__de See also: Call for Papers and registration form for papers and posters <URL:http://www.restauratoren.de> Martin Hopfner Restaurator fur archaologisches Kulturgut Museen der Stadt Aschaffenburg City Museums Aschaffenburg Schlossplatz 4 63739 Aschaffenburg Deutschland / Germany +49 6021 4511720 Fax: +49 6021 4535000 *** Conservation DistList Instance 19:40 Distributed: Sunday, March 5, 2006 Message Id: cdl-19-40-001 ***Received on Wednesday, 22 February, 2006
