We are seeking a qualified and experienced book conservator to treat
the first minute book of the Surrey and Kent Commission of Sewers
1569-1606. The position is a fixed term post supported by the
National Manuscripts Conservation Trust. The minimum requirements
for applicants are a qualification in book or paper conservation and
a demonstrated ability in the conservation of historic bindings.

The volume is the first minute book for the Surrey and Kent
Commission of Sewers. The commission was the earliest of the London
sewer commissions to be established on an organised basis, in 1554.
It gives a vivid snapshot of the conditions and problems experienced
both by residents of Tudor England and by those attempting to
control and maintain the watercourses and drainage facilities which
formed such a vital part of daily life.

London Metropolitan Archives is the largest local government archive
repository in the United Kingdom. It collects the archives of
London institutions including parishes, hospitals, charities,
businesses as well as the public utilities. These records tell the
story of London and Londoners through seven centuries. The office
receives some 30,000 visitors and 21,000 distance enquiries a year.
Their interests include genealogy, local history and academic
research. There is a regular programme of exhibitions and
publications to promote knowledge of London's history and
development.
