Subject: Studentship at Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent University School of Biomedical and Natural Sciences A Leverhulme Trust funded research collaboration between Nottingham Trent University, the British Museum, The National Gallery London and the University of Kent Canterbury A Leverhulme Trust funded PhD studentship on the application of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to art conservation is available in the School of Biomedical and Natural Sciences, Nottingham Trent University. Optical Coherence Tomography is a scanning Michelson interferometer capable of non-invasive examination of the stratigraphy of paint layers. The PhD project involves using OCT to study the effects of aging of paint and varnish material of historic paintings or painted objects in terms of their optical properties. This is an interdisciplinary project involving close collaboration between physicists, conservators and conservation scientists. For further background of the project, please refer to a paper in Optics Express by the research team: <URL:http://www.opticsexpress.org/abstract.cfm?URI=OPEX-13-16-6133> (it takes a few minutes to download the full text and multimedia file). The PhD studentship would suit a highly motivated person with interest in both optics and conservation science/art history. Entry requirement: a first class or upper second class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in Physics or a related physical science discipline. The minimum English language proficiency requirement is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 550/CBTOEFL 213 for candidates who have not undertaken a Higher degree in the UK. The studentship offers a bursary of UKP12,300 (tax free) per annum for three years and Home/EU student fees. Applications from overseas students are welcome, but a successful candidate would be responsible for paying the difference between overseas and home student fees. (Fees for 2005/2006: UKP3,101 for Home/EU students and UKP8,950 for overseas students) For informal enquiries, please contact Dr. Haida Liang +44 115 848 3448 haida.liang [at] ntu__ac__uk For an application form, please contact: Mrs Doreen Corlett Research and Graduate Studies Office Erasmus Darwin Building Nottingham Trent University Clifton Lane Nottingham NG11 8NS UK sat.research [at] ntu__ac__uk doreen.corlett [at] ntu__ac__uk +44 115 848 3269 Fax: +44 115 848 6616 Candidates must send a completed application form which should include a statement about why they are applying for the post and how they meet the essential qualifications to Doreen Corlett, by post, fax or email by Friday 10 March 2006.
