Icon, the Institute of Conservation is to receive UKP1Million from
the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a scheme of 60 training
placements in conservation. The grant will enable Icon to offer 60
traineeships over four years in the conservation of objects and
collections--from books and jewelry to stained glass and
architectural details.

The scheme will focus on those conservation skills which are scarce
and in high demand across the UK, particularly those where no formal
training exists. Many of these placements will be made available to
new entrants to the profession, offering a recognised unit of
experience to those who have been working at a junior level or who
wish to change career from a related field.

Icon will offer up to twenty internship-type training placements per
year for four years, starting later in 2006. The placements will
range from 6 to 24 months in duration, based in conservation
workshops or on site in both the public and private sectors. Over
60 UK organisations have already expressed initial interest in
participating as hosts. Icon invites workshops and institutions to
get in touch if they are willing to be involved as a hosts or
supervisors and haven't yet expressed interest.

Icon's Chief Executive Alastair McCapra commented,

"Thanks to HLF, the profession now has a superb opportunity to
    create a co-ordinated UK-wide scheme of work-based training in
conservation. This will help bridge the skills gap between
training and work and will also provide opportunities for new
entrants--a source of fresh talent for the profession. It's a
great step forward for Icon to undertake such a high-profile
    project."
