Subject: Workshop on preservation microfilming
Preservation Microfilming: The Silver Standard SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network Georgia Archives, Morrow, GA February 9-10, 2006 8:30 am - 5:30 pm (Thursday) 8:30 - noon (Friday) Do deteriorated and crumbling 19th century book and paper collections comprise a large part of your library or archive? Which reformatting technique will best preserve this material for the long term? Digital technology is the choice to enhance access, but the Council on Library and Information Resources considers preservation microfilming "the gold standard" for preserving the intellectual content of brittle, endangered materials. This workshop is designed to train project administrators in institutions to plan, implement, and manage microfilming projects. The one and a half day session will cover the follow topics: planning microfilm projects, selecting and preparing materials, microfilm technology and equipment, standards, inspection, and quality control, agents of film deterioration, and proper microfilm storage. The class discussion covers traditional filming projects, hybrid projects, and "film-to-digital" conversion projects. Workshop includes a hands-on quality control exercise including film inspection, and a tour of a microfilming operation. Cost is $165 SOLINET members, $205 Non-members. Early bird discounts and late fees apply. Any institution in Georgia qualifies for the member rate.
