If you have not found it yet, The Getty Publication

    Painted Wood:  History and Conservation, 1998 (Symposium by the
    Wooden Artifacts Group of the AIC in Williamsburg Virginia,
    1994)

has several case histories as well as discussions on the ethics of
loss compensation in furniture and other painted wooden objects.
