Conservation Technician Internship
Building Conservation Associates, Inc.

Building Conservation Associates, Inc. is accepting applications for
five paid conservation technician intern positions.  The interns
will conduct conservation cleaning and stabilization treatments on
several large industrial heritage objects within a future museum
building--the Steam Pumping Engines at the High Service Building of
the Chestnut Hill Waterworks in Boston, Massachusetts.

BCA is a private consulting and research firm practicing
preservation design, preservation planning, conditions assessments,
materials science, and historic building documentation.

Project outline:

    Clean and stabilize iron metal work.
    Clean and stabilize translucent finished woodwork.
    Clean glass objects as integrated elements of larger metal
    objects.
    Document typical treatments via digital photography and brief
    text summaries.

Qualifications: Successful applicants should be enrolled in an
accredited graduate level degree program for art conservation,
historic preservation, museum studies or related curriculum and/ or
have some conservation technician experience.  They should have
experience working with fragile objects, the ability to wear a
respirator and goggles all day, the ability to perform moderately
strenuous physical labor.  They should be willing to carry 40
pounds, and they should be comfortable working on high platforms.
The successful candidates also need to be willing to work closely
with other interns, on-site professionals and with BCA staff.

The Interns will report to the Boston area Director of Building
Conservation Associates and to the site project conservator as well
as work with construction professionals while on the job site. The
five positions will be for 10 to 15 weeks during the summer of 2006.
Schedules will be based on 24 or 40 hour work weeks and may be
adjusted to accommodate student's schedules.  The tentative project
start date will be May 29, 2006.  Transportation and housing costs
are the responsibility of the intern.  The site is 10 miles from
downtown Boston and located on a public transportation line.
