Subject: Digital Preservation Discussion Group
The new Digital Preservation: Managing Digital Objects Discussion Group (under the auspices of the Management Committee) will meet for the first time in San Antonio. Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, Room 008B 22 Jan 2006 8-10am Lars Meyer, Emory University and Robin Dale, RLG, are co-chairing the group. Topic: The launch of the Digital Preservation Discussion Group at ALA San Antonio comes at a fortuitous time. Recent concerns expressed by ALA President Michael Gorman and Don Waters, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Program Officer for Scholarly Communications <URL:http://www.arl.org/osc/EjournalPreservation_Final.pdf> have again brought digital preservation issues to the forefront, especially within ALCTS. Because of this, ALCTS has asked PARS to prepare a position statement on behalf of ALCTS and the preservation community. A task force has been formed to prepare a statement, as well as update/revise the ALA Preservation Policy <URL:http://www.ala.org/ala/ alctscontent/alctspubsbucket/webpublications/ alctspreservation/alapreservationp/alapreservation.htm> to better address digital preservation issues. To kick off this process, this first meeting will be used for community discussion in an effort to gather suggestions and comments from PARS members before the task force begins its work. While the topic is somewhat broad, we envision that the discussion group could tackle some of the following topics that might inform the policy: * define digital preservation * clarify the difference between creating digital objects and preserving digital objects * the role of metadata in (digital) preservation. These topics, in addition to others, are likely to be revisited in future sessions of the discussion group. If you have any items you would like to share with the co-chairs (to make sure they get on the agenda or if you would like to provide comments, but cannot attend the discussion group, please send your comments to Robin Dale <robin.dale [at] rlg__org>. We hope to see you there, Robin and Lars *** Conservation DistList Instance 19:33 Distributed: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 Message Id: cdl-19-33-005 ***Received on Wednesday, 18 January, 2006
