The Assistant Conservator will primarily work on an HLF funded
project to conserve 17th century wills and 18th century probate
bonds, both paper and parchment. Many of the paper documents in
particular are in a very fragile state and require extensive
conservation. There will also be the opportunity to participate in a
variety of other work undertaken by the conservation unit, including
book conservation, box making, paper repair, preventive rehousing,
environmental monitoring and exhibition mounting, and applicants
should have the ability to adapt skills to a variety of work.

The Conservation Unit has a permanent establishment of  two full
time conservators, and additional staffing from project funding. It
also offers work placements for conservation students. The Assistant
Conservator should be self motivated, enthusiastic and willing to
work as part of a small team under the supervision of the Senior
Conservator. The postholder will be professionally qualified in
archive conservation and some knowledge of leafcasting and parchment
repair would be an advantage.
