Contract Book and Paper Conservator
Sam Noble Oklahoma Natural History Museum

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History at the University
of Oklahoma seeks a paper conservator for up to two years for a
project funded by a Save America's Treasures grant. The project is
to complete conservation treatment and re-housing of three Native
American ledger books in the collection of the Sam Noble Oklahoma
Museum of Natural History. Conservation treatment activities will be
conducted in the Conservation Lab at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum
of Natural History. The Contract Paper Conservator will work closely
with the museum's Conservator.

One of the ledger books originated from the Kiowa Nation and two
from the Cheyenne Nation, and each serves as an important record of
the customs, religion, myths, values, and traditions that comprised
nineteenth century Native American life. The conservation of the
Kiowa ledger book will allow production of a new publication
entitled "One Hundred Summers: A Kiowa Calendar Record", currently
being produced with the support the IMLS Museums for America grant
program.

The successful candidate must have an advanced conservation degree
specializing in paper conservation from a recognized conservation
training program or equivalent apprenticeship training. Experience
with ledger drawings is preferred but not required.

The project provides for consultant fees of up to $44,000 for the
completion of the project, with an additional stipend available for
travel and lodging to accommodate a candidate who does not plan to
relocate. This is a full or part-time temporary position. The
position will commence as soon as possible.

Position is open until filled. Applicants submit a curriculum
vitae, letter of intent, and a list of references to:
