New Academic Program for Long-Term Preservation of New Media and
Digital Information.

The Stuttgart Academy of Art and Design, which has a long tradition
in the training of conservators for various disciplines, now
received a state grant to create a unique research and training
opportunity: Starting in April 2006, a two-year master-degree (M.A.)
program will impart the possibilities of long-term preservation and
restoration of analogue and digital photographs, video recordings
and digital cultural and archival heritage.

The program will use academic resources that already exist within
the academy and its environment, classes taught by visiting
international professionals and it will cooperate with leading
research institutions. Future "Conservators for New Media and
Digital Information" will not only acquire theoretical and
technological insight, but will also use real-world projects at
partner institutions in Germany and elsewhere, in order to prepare
for their field of activity.

Expecting an international group of students and teachers, most
classes will be taught in English. However, basic knowledge of the
German language will be needed. Admission requires that students
already have a university degree (B.A. or B.S.) and possibly have
professional experience in a field close to the program's
objectives, like conservation, media or computer science, (art)
history, documentation, archive or library science, etc.

Due to the state grant, tuition fees will be kept low, compared to
similar conservation programs in other countries. Deadline for
applications is January 15, 2006.
