I am sending this on behalf of the Curator of Air and Space at the
Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, who is not a
subscriber to the DistList but who has additional information on the
subject of Disposal of Radioactive Material in the UK.

    >I have recently heard that the UK government has set up a subsidised
    >programme to collect and dispose of surplus radioactive sources,
    >which will run until March 2007. ...

    The government programme to dispose of radioactive sources was
    opened up to UK based museums following the work of the British
    Aviation Preservation Council. Until BAPC's involvement, the
    disposal programme was only open to educational establishments
    and the NHS.

    BAPC has also produced a manual 'Don't Panic!: A Brief Guide to
    Radiation for Aviation Museums'. This manual has been given
    free of charge to all BAPC members, and is available on request
    to other interested parties and organisations. To obtain an up
    to date copy of 'Don't Panic!' please contact Nick Forder, Vice
    Chairman of BAPC n.forder<-a t->msim< . >org< . >uk
