Conservation scientist (2)
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI)

The GCI Science department is seeking to fill two positions in the
Museum Research Laboratory (MRL) located at the Getty Center. The
mission of the MRL is to conduct scientific research in
collaboration with conservators and curators to further the
understanding and preservation of the collection of the J. Paul
Getty Museum and other institutions with which we collaborate; to
disseminate our findings through professional publications and
conferences; and to contribute to the advancement of the field of
conservation through the organization of seminars, symposia and
workshops.

Successful candidates will be expected to conduct scientific
analyses and research on works of art using the wide range of
chemical and instrumental techniques available at the GCI. In
addition, independent research projects that further the
understanding or preservation of works of art, collaborating with
other cultural or academic institutions as appropriate, may be
developed. Professional development is encouraged and supported
through participation in professional meetings and workshops.

The GCI Science department is seeking individuals who will
complement and enhance the existing expertise of the MRL. For one
position, experience and interest in the examination of paintings is
preferred; the second position may be filled in any other area of
conservation science. All candidates should have a broad range of
skills and interests, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to
work effectively in small teams, and be versatile and creative
problem solvers. A Ph.D. in chemistry or other physical science is
preferred and a minimum of 3 7 years experience in conservation
science is required, although exceptional candidates with equivalent
training or experience will be considered. Excellent written and
oral communication skills are required.
