Digital Imaging Specialist Position
US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

The US National Archives and Records Administration has posted a
position for a Digital Imaging Specialist (Preservation) in the
Digital Imaging Lab of the Special Media Preservation Laboratory,
Preservation Programs, National Archives at College Park, 8601
Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20470.

The Digital Imaging Specialist will provide imaging services and
technical assistance to a variety of projects designed to meet
NARA's strategic goals, and will provide management program analysis
of reformatting records using digital imaging technology and of the
long-term management and maintenance of digital image files. The
Specialist will work with original archival records such as textual
documents, photographs, maps and technical drawings, and historical
artifacts. Different projects will require different approaches to
tone and color reproduction, the Specialist will have to determine
the appropriate technical approach for each project, including
scanning to produce an accurate rendition of a record or a visually
optimized image for exhibit or publication. The Specialist will
operate routinely both Macintosh and Windows computer based digital
imaging systems, the digital imaging systems will include hardware
such as scanners (flatbed, film, document, book, microfilm, etc.),
digital cameras, and printers. The Specialist will use a broad range
of software applications for scanning, calibration, image processing
(Adobe Photoshop), hardcopy output, and file storage/management in
order to achieve a desired result. The Specialist will assist in
identifying appropriate choices for updating and/or replacing
hardware or software, and the acquisition of vendor services. The
Specialist will evaluate and conduct quality control inspection of
digital images and metadata, to ensure that lab standards are being
maintained. The Specialist will work with other Digital Imaging Lab
staff on policy issues relating to the long-term management and
preservation of digital images, including research and testing,
development of technical guidelines, identification and codification
of appropriate metadata schema, evaluating technical approaches such
as migration, and management of the digital images produced in the
Digital Imaging Lab.
