Ultrasonic humidifiers

I have been thinking about purchasing an ultrasonic humidifier, and
wondered if any of you had opinions about these, and the pros and
cons of humidifiers available in department stores and those elegant
ones offered by conservation vendors.  Is equipment three times the
price always better?  Do the conservation models also raise concerns
about white particulates?  Are there ways to easily modify
humidifiers bought at department stores?
