Examining and Treating Iron-Gall Ink on Paper
A two-day workshop
with Julie L. Biggs
The New York Academy of Medicine
Friday and Saturday, November 4-5, 2005
9am-4pm

The New York Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is pleased to
announce a two-day workshop with paper conservator Julie L. Biggs.
The aim of the two-day workshop is to give practicing conservators
an overview of how to examine and evaluate the treatment needs of
artifacts inscribed with iron-gall ink.

Lectures will cover the history, composition, chemistry,
deterioration, and treatment of iron-gall ink on paper. Practical
sessions will focus on visual examination techniques, pre-treatment
testing, and the development of treatment protocols. Participants
will prepare and use calcium phytate, which is an aqueous iron-(II)
complexing treatment that has been developed for iron-gall
ink-corroded papers.

Julie Biggs obtained her diploma in Paper Conservation at the
Istituto per l'Arte e il Restauro in Florence, Italy, and undertook
intern training in the U.K., and in the U.S. She worked as Senior
Paper Conservator at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC
from 1994-2000. In 2000, she was awarded a Samuel H. Kress
Conservation Publication Fellowship to prepare a book-length
overview of iron-gall-ink-on-paper for practicing conservators that
nears completion. Ms. Biggs has taught several workshops for
conservation professionals and has operated as a freelance
conservator in the Washington D.C. area for more than ten years. She
is currently employed as contract Senior Paper Conservator at the
Library of Congress.
