Conservation Librarian
Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory
Preservation Department
New York University Libraries

The Conservation Librarian is the senior conservation position in
the Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory at New York University
Libraries. The conservator is responsible for the physical care and
treatment of a wide range of research materials and manages a
comprehensive conservation program for NYU's Division of Libraries,
including the general collections of Bobst Library and the rare and
archival collections of NYU's Fales Library, Tamiment Library,
University Archives, Institute of Fine Arts and Courant Institute of
Mathematical Sciences. NYU recently renovated and enlarged the
capacity of the Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory to
accommodate a dramatically larger conservation program. Thus, the
Conservation Librarian is expected to broaden the scope and reach of
the current conservation program to meet the growing needs of the
general and special collections.

The conservator reports to the Head of the Preservation Department
and also assists in managing preservation efforts within the
department, including: assessing the conservation needs of the
special collections; establishing conservation priorities within the
Libraries and archives; managing treatments and procedures for
circulating collections, special collections and archives materials;
performing treatments on special collections materials; hiring,
training and supervising two full-time conservation technicians and
3-4 student workers; assisting in development and coordination of
special projects; ordering conservation supplies; maintaining and
analyzing conservation statistics and treatment records; and
contracting for conservation services on a project-related, as
needed basis.

The Conservation Librarian must communicate, consult with, and
advise other librarians, curators and Digital Library Team staff at
NYU regarding treatments and processing of research and special
collections materials. Participation in professional activities is
strongly encouraged.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent
conservation experience. A second masters or the equivalent is
required for tenure. A minimum of five years experience as a
conservator in a conservation program in a research library and at
least two years of supervisory experience is required. In addition,
the candidate should be professionally active and must have
extensive knowledge of current conservation principles, practices
and procedures. Experience in conservation needs assessment and
treatment decision-making; demonstrated ability to work
independently and productively in a fluid, complex organization and
to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; are
essential. Established supervisory skills, strong analytic and
organizational skills, and the ability to work with staff at all
levels and with many different backgrounds, are also crucial.
Additional experience in conservation of archival collections
preferred. The candidate's portfolio of conservation work and a
writing sample will be required at interview. Salary/Benefits:
Faculty status and attractive benefits package, including five weeks
annual vacation. Salary is commensurate with experience and
background.

New York University Libraries: Library facilities at New York
University serve the school's 40,000 students and faculty and
contain more than 4 million volumes. New York University is a
member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Research
Libraries Group, the Digital Library Federation; serves as the
administrative headquarters of the Research Library Association of
South Manhattan, a consortium that includes three academic
institutions.

Interested candidates are requested to submit a letter of
application that specifically states how background and experiences
are relevant to the position responsibilities and qualifications;
current resume; and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of
three references to
