Conservation Librarian Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory Preservation Department New York University Libraries The Conservation Librarian is the senior conservation position in the Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory at New York University Libraries. The conservator is responsible for the physical care and treatment of a wide range of research materials and manages a comprehensive conservation program for NYU's Division of Libraries, including the general collections of Bobst Library and the rare and archival collections of NYU's Fales Library, Tamiment Library, University Archives, Institute of Fine Arts and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. NYU recently renovated and enlarged the capacity of the Barbara Goldsmith Conservation Laboratory to accommodate a dramatically larger conservation program. Thus, the Conservation Librarian is expected to broaden the scope and reach of the current conservation program to meet the growing needs of the general and special collections. The conservator reports to the Head of the Preservation Department and also assists in managing preservation efforts within the department, including: assessing the conservation needs of the special collections; establishing conservation priorities within the Libraries and archives; managing treatments and procedures for circulating collections, special collections and archives materials; performing treatments on special collections materials; hiring, training and supervising two full-time conservation technicians and 3-4 student workers; assisting in development and coordination of special projects; ordering conservation supplies; maintaining and analyzing conservation statistics and treatment records; and contracting for conservation services on a project-related, as needed basis. The Conservation Librarian must communicate, consult with, and advise other librarians, curators and Digital Library Team staff at NYU regarding treatments and processing of research and special collections materials. Participation in professional activities is strongly encouraged. Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent conservation experience. A second masters or the equivalent is required for tenure. A minimum of five years experience as a conservator in a conservation program in a research library and at least two years of supervisory experience is required. In addition, the candidate should be professionally active and must have extensive knowledge of current conservation principles, practices and procedures. Experience in conservation needs assessment and treatment decision-making; demonstrated ability to work independently and productively in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; are essential. Established supervisory skills, strong analytic and organizational skills, and the ability to work with staff at all levels and with many different backgrounds, are also crucial. Additional experience in conservation of archival collections preferred. The candidate's portfolio of conservation work and a writing sample will be required at interview.
