Sackler Gallery Smithsonian Institution Lecture, November 7, 2005 Meyer Auditorium Freer Gallery of Art 1150 Independence Ave. SW Washington DC 20560 2-4 pm Mr. Akinori Okawa, Adjunct Researcher, Kochi Prefectural Paper Technology Center, Japan, will give a public lecture focusing on early Japanese papers, their production methods and fiber analysis. The lecture will be given in Japanese with English translation. Workshop, November 8-9, 2005 Mr. Okawa will lead a two day workshop applying microscopy and traditional identification methods to Japanese and Chinese paper-based artifacts. Modern East Asian papers commonly used in Western paper conservation will also be examined. This hands-on workshop will familiarize participants with analytical techniques and various paper and fiber types in order to more accurately characterize and qualify East Asian papers.
