AIC response to Hurricane Katrina

Representing 3,135 conservators in the United States and abroad, the
American Institute for Conservation (AIC) is responding to the needs
of collections impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The following is a
brief summary of AIC initiatives. More information, including key
links to disaster recovery resources, is available from the AIC
website <URL:http://aic.stanford.edu>

AIC's Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Committee
immediately began collaborating with the American Association of
Museums, the Southeastern Museums Conference and the Southeast
Regional Conservation Association to bring together information
regarding response and recovery needs. These groups are coordinating
donations for travel, lodging and the purchase of supplies. Read

AIC is matching volunteer conservators with specific experience and
expertise to the needs of particular sites. AIC is participating in
this effort through the Heritage Emergency National Task Force,
along with such organizations as Heritage Preservation, FEMA, the
National Trust for Historic Preservation, AASLH, SEMC, AAM, and
others. Read more at

AIC has established a website for sharing and disseminating
information on the recovery of cultural materials, entitled National
Collections Emergency News (NCEN).

This web-based news service is designed to share urgent,
authoritative information pertaining to disaster recovery of works
of art, artifacts, archives, family heirlooms, as well as associated
collections and structures. The purpose this site is to provide a
centralized repository of news as well as related health and safety
information useful to those involved in efforts to preserve cultural
material impacted by the hurricane. The AIC is grateful to Walter
Henry for inspiring and establishing this service and to Stanford
University for hosting this site.
