Senior Conservation Scientist
Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Conservation Center of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is
seeking a Senior Conservation Scientist for the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation endowed position. The successful candidate will be the
head of the Conservation Research Laboratory and report directly to
the Director of Conservation. The Senior Conservation Scientist is
responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory,
including the supervision of interns, fellows and research staff,
and works closely with curators and conservators to preserve,
interpret, and document the Museum's diverse collections.

The successful candidate will examine works of art and conduct
chemical and instrumental analysis using a broad range of analytical
techniques including Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared
Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Fluorescence,  UV-Visible
Spectroscopy, Polarized-Light Microscopy, and Thermoluminescence.
S/He will also conduct original research in collaboration with
curatorial and conservation staff for the long-term preservation of
the Museum's decorative arts, painting and sculpture, costume and
textiles, prints and drawings,  and contemporary art collections.
Publication in the professional literature and participation in
symposia, seminars and other professional meetings is encouraged
through a travel grant funded by the endowment.

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a recognized college or
university with a PhD in the physical sciences, or equivalent
training and experience. Previous work experience in a museum
environment is preferred.  All applicants should have at least three
years supervisory experience and possess strong leadership qualities
as well as good written and verbal communications skills.
