Subject: BA festival of Science
This September, Trinity College Dublin will host one of the world's leading scientific meetings, the BA festival of Science. Organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA), the festival will run for one week, from 3 September 2005. Of special interest to Museum, Archives and Library staff will be two sessions in the main programme on Monday 5th September. The first session between 9am-12pm is titled Secrets of Manuscripts revealed: recent advances in the field of manuscript research. It will include four papers: The Book of Kells: a new pigment study Dr John Fields, TCD Lasers-an innovative Tool in the Restoration of Manuscripts Dr Wolfgang Kautek, University of Vienna The case of degraded ink Dr Jana Kolar, National and University Library of Slovenia Rereading the lost text: new techniques applied to palimpsest research Daniel Deckers, University of Hamburg. The second session at 2-4pm is titled Science of Cultural Heritage Preservation. It will include four papers: Preserving the timbers of Henry VIII's warship, the Mary Rose Mark Jones, The Mary Rose Trust Conservation of Wall paintings: intersection of science and art Sharon Cather, Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London Protection of historic buildings and archaeological sites Dr Cristina Sabbioni, CNR-ISAC Scientific analysis of easel paintings Dr Narayan Khandekar, Straus Center for Conservation, Harvard University. The sessions will take place in the Lloyd Institute LT3, at Trinity College Dublin. The cost is Euro 7 per session. Online booking and the full programme can be viewed at <URL:http://www.the-ba.net> On Tuesday 6 September 2005 the Institute of Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Ireland (ICHAWI), and Trinity College Library will host a half day theory-based workshop for mid-career conservators, at Trinity College Library. The course is titled Stabilisation of iron gall ink for conservators and will be delivered by Dr Jana Kolar, Head of the National Centre for Preservation of Library Materials, National and University Library of Slovenia.
