Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory

The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory seeks applicants
for 4 positions for the project, Developing a Records Database for
the State of Maryland's Archaeological Collections.  The purpose of
this project is to archivally preserve and make electronically
accessible the field and laboratory records associated with a
collection (artifact catalogs were previously entered into an
electronic database).  The long-term goal is to make the database
web-accessible. These positions are funded in part by a generous
grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The positions:

Project/Lead Archaeologist: responsible for supervising the
collating, organizing, archival preservation, and electronic
scanning of paper and film records from the State's collections;
will also supervise the development of a database/filing system for
the electronic records generated by this project.  Responsibilities
include checking records in hard and electronic copy, archival
packaging, scanning and editing of scanned files, database
development, and editing of an existing Finding Aid describing
records material for each collection.  The Project Archaeologist
will supervise two full time individuals and two consultants.
Knowledge of the nature of archaeological records and electronic
databases a must, including Access, Excel, SQL, and Fox-Pro.
Knowledge of Mid-Atlantic archaeology preferred; must have excellent
writing and communication skills.  MA in anthropology, history,
American Studies, or related field required, or applicant may
substitute a BA and four years experience.   Approximately 18
months, $19.39/hour.

Archaeological Database Manager: responsible for integrating the
work products of the Records Database project with existing artifact
catalog and GIS databases.  The Archaeological Database Manager will
supervise the development of a database/filing system for the
electronic records generated as a part of the Records Project that
will integrate with existing databases and that can be made
web-accessible.  Responsibilities include managing existing
archaeological databases at the MAC Lab. Knowledge of the nature of
archaeological materials and electronic databases a must, including
Access, Excel, SQL, and Fox-Pro.  Knowledge of Mid-Atlantic
archaeology preferred; must have excellent communication skills.  MA
in anthropology, history, or American Studies, or related field
required with two years experience in database management, or
applicant may substitute a BA and six years experience.
Approximately 18 months, $18.01/hour.

Project Archivist: responsible for the collating, organizing,

records; will also assist with the development of a database/filing
system for the electronic records generated as a part of this
project. Responsibilities include checking records in hard and
electronic copy, archival packaging, scanning and editing of scanned
files, and database entry. Knowledge of the nature of paper and film
records, electronic scanning, and some experience with computer
programs a must as are excellent communication skills.  MA in
history, archival management, or related field required, or
applicant may substitute a BA and two years experience.
Approximately 12 months, $17.53/hour.

Records Technician: will assist with the collating, organizing,
archival preservation, and electronic scanning of paper and film
records from the collections.  Responsibilities include checking
records in hard and electronic copy, archival packaging, scanning
and editing of scanned files, and database entry.   Some knowledge
of the nature of paper and film records, electronic scanning, and
some experience with computer programs a must as are excellent
communication skills.  BA in anthropology, history, archival
management, or related field required, or applicant may substitute
an AA and two years experience.  Approximately 12 months,
$13.49/hour.

All positions start on or about October 19, 2005; all positions are
full time contractual with no benefits.
