Ann Schaftel, an international expert on the conservation of
Thangkas, is presenting a course on the care and conservation of
Thangkas for Buddhist practitioners, art collectors, students;
anyone with an interested in Thangkas and their preservation. (Refer
to attached flyer).

Ann has also agreed to present an expanded  intensive program for
conservators from Monday - Wednesday. This will be run as a
continuation of the two-day weekend workshop and Ann will focus on
specific conservation issues and treatment options. This
continuation of the workshop will be restricted to a very small
number of participants as the focus each afternoon will be an
examination of the Thangkas in the National Gallery of Victoria
collection.

Program

The first 2 days are open to all participants. Days 3 to 5 are open
to practising conservators and conservation students only.

Days one and two: The 2-day weekend course welcomes Buddhist
practitioners, art collectors, and students. Each day offers
illustrated talks as well as question and answer time. Participants
are encouraged to bring their own Thangkas as examples.

    Day One

        Introduction
        Textile Mountings--Front and Back Panels
        Textile Mountings--Accessories (covers, hanging tabs, wooden
        dowels, decorative knobs, leather details, metal corners,
        silk cording)
        Discussion and advice focusing on individual Thangkas
        brought in by course participants

    Day Two

        Paintings--Support
        Paintings--Ground and Paint layers
        Thangka Storage and Display
        Discussion and advice focusing on individual Thangkas
        brought in by course participants.

Days three to five: During these three days participants will
develop an understanding of the application of conservation methods
used by objects, paper, textile and paintings conservators to treat
Thangkas. Ann will discuss decision-making in relation to the
treatment of Thangka. Participants will be guided through the
process of making decisions about the treatment of Thangkas; in
particular to understand those treatments they can undertake
themselves as conservators and situations where a specialist Thangka
conservator is required.  These three days will build on the
information provided during the first two days of the program, but
will involve the deeper and more technical knowledge required to
develop a program of Thangka conservation.

        Conservation of textile mountings and accessories

        Afternoon: National Gallery of Victoria
        Examination of Thangkas

    Day Four

        Morning: Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation, the
        University of Melbourne
        Conservation of paintings, Thangka storage and display

        Afternoon: National Gallery of Victoria
        Examination of Thangkas

    Day Five

        Morning: Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation, the
        University of Melbourne
        Discussion of specific issues

        Afternoon: National Gallery of Victoria
        Examination of Thangkas

It is recommended that conservators do enroll for the full 5 day
program, as the first 2 days include discussion of the cultural
context for Thangkas fabrication and use, understanding of which is
critical to the determination of appropriate conservation and care.
However, 3-day registration may be considered on request. ($440.00)
