Removing mack tack

I wondered if anyone has had any experience with removing mack tack
from paper documents? The item in question is a printed map on paper
with a linen backing (just over 2 X 3 feet). The map itself has
several losses, and the mack tack fully encloses it. I'm thinking
freezing or heat may release the adhesive, but wondered if anyone
else has been presented with this challenge and wondered what you
tried and how things worked out?
