NYPL appointment

From: Evelyn Frangakis <efrangakis<-a>
Date: Monday, August 8, 2005
Jacob Nadal has been appointed Field Service Librarian in the
Preservation Division of The New York Public Library effective
September 26, 2005. In this new preservation position, Mr. Nadal
will manage a wide variety of preventive preservation operations
providing support to collections-holding divisions in the NYPL
Research Libraries. Field service operations include preservation
needs assessments, preservation education and outreach,
environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, emergency
preparedness and response, and project planning assistance.

Presently Mr. Nadal is Head of the E. Lingle Craig Preservation
Laboratory at the Indiana University Libraries. He manages all
operations of a comprehensive preservation services program to the
nineteen Bloomington campus libraries in the Indiana University
Library system. Mr. Nadal also teaches preservation classes at the
university's School of Library and Information Science. Among his
many professional activities, he is presently co-chair of the ALA
Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) Audio-Visual Media
Discussion Group, chair of the PARS Reformatting Discussion Group
and a member of the PARS Reformatting Committee.

Mr. Nadal is a key addition to the staff of the Preservation
Division, bringing valuable experience, new ideas and energy as the
Collections Care Program expands its services to the NYPL Research
Libraries.

The New York Public Library comprises a set of scholarly research
collections and a network of community libraries, and its
intellectual and cultural range is both global and local, while
singularly attuned to New York City. The research collections of
over forty-three million items resemble the holdings of the great
national and university libraries and the community circulating
libraries with seven million items resemble classic American
municipal libraries. The Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Division
supports the mission of the Research Libraries by preserving both
the artifacts and intellectual content of NYPL's rich and vast
collections. A wide variety of preservation activities are performed
in four units: Binding and Shelf Preparation, Collections Care,
Conservation Treatment, and Reformatting.
